Inclusion of Diversity for Organizational Development

Inclusion of Diversity as a Strategic Resource for Organizational Development: An Introduction to the Valuing Inclusion Model (VIM)

Diversity and inclusion are central concepts in today's organizational and leadership discourses. Many leaders believe that diversity and inclusion are key factors in creating dynamic, creative, and successful organizations. They strive to cultivate an inclusive culture where all employees feel valued, respected, and engaged, regardless of their background, position, role, or task. However, they often encounter challenges and obstacles in their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within their organizations.

This can be due to their initiatives lacking clear goals, relevant knowledge, or effective methods. Resistance or indifference among certain employees or stakeholders who don't perceive the value or necessity of diversity and inclusion can also be factors. Additionally, there is a plethora of different theories, models, and tools claiming to offer solutions for diversity and inclusion issues, but these aren't always tailored to the specific context or situation. This can lead to confusion, frustration, and fatigue for leaders seeking guidance and support.

In the fall of 2022, we formulated a new method for addressing diversity and inclusion issues in organizations—a method we call the Valuing Inclusion Model (VIM). This model is based on a systematic and critical review of existing research in the field, as well as our own experience as consultants and educators in the diversity and inclusion domain. VIM is built upon four fundamental values that constitute the core of inclusive leadership and an enabling organizational culture: representation, participation, application, and appreciation. Essentially, these values represent different aspects of diversity and inclusion, such as demographics, processes, outcomes, and relationships. Moreover, VIM provides a structured and measurable framework for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating diversity and inclusion initiatives within organizations. In this way, VIM serves as a method not only for leaders but also for employees who wish to contribute to a more inclusive workplace.

By using VIM, organizations can leverage diversity as a strategic resource to promote creativity, innovation, growth, and notably, sustainability.
